Rising Sun girls soccer coach Johnny Hartnett didn't need to employ a fiery, Knute Rockne-style pregame pep talk to inspire his team heading into the game against North East Wednesday, October 10.
Last season's loss to the Indians, provided Rising Sun with sufficient motivation and turned the tables on their county and region rival with a 2-1 triumph. Led by race winners Emma Cease and Alex Longeway, the Rising Sun girls and Bohemia Manor boys captured the title at the Cecil County cross country meet held at Calvert Regional Park Tuesday, October 9.
Cease captured the girls event in a time of 20:01, eight seconds ahead of teammate Heather Horst. Tome, North East, and Rising Sun prevailed as six county field hockey teams played Monday, October 8, at Rullo Stadium on the campus of the University of Delaware.
In the opener, Tome topped Bohemia Manor 4-0. After being outplayed for parts of the first half, North East girls soccer coach Matt Roberts elected to move junior midfielder Savannah Dorey to more of an attacking role.
The decision paid off when Dorey scored midway through the second half to help the Indians nip Edgewood 1-0 Wednesday, October 3, on a natural grass field at Calvert Regional Park. Emma Cease of Rising Sun and Elkton's Cameron Spaeth won the the individual races and the Tiger girls and Perryville boys took the team titles at the Susquehanna Division cross country meet Tuesday, October 2, at Perryville Community Park.
Led by a 41 from medalist Will Smethurst, Bohemia Manor captured the Susquehanna Division golf tournament Tuesday, October 2, at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club Rising Sun.
The North East field hockey team topped Tome 2-1 at Calvert Regional Park Thursday, September 27.
The district golf tournament began Tuesday at Mountain Branch Golf Club in Joppa.
Play was suspended by rain and the tournament will resume Tuesday, October 10. Rising Sun field hockey coach Katie Keyes finally got her message across.
"We need to get rid of the idea that everything needs to be perfect, and just do it," Keyes has repeatedly told her team. Tigers' midfielder Biz Hurm heeded that advice and the result led to Julia Herrmann's goal as Rising Sun recorded its first win of the season by nipping North East 1-0 at Calvert Regional Park Monday, September 17. The Perryville volleyball team topped C. Milton Wright 25-12, 25-9, 25-9 Tuesday afternoon, September 11.
Rebecca Holman supplied seven kills and five aces. Alex Leslie and Gracey Stevens each collected five kills and three aces. Jordan Carr contributed 19 assists and four aces. |
